South Africa Traffic Laws 2025: New Rules And Penalties Drivers Must Know

Starting in 2025, there will be the latest reforms in road safety measures in South Africa. The reforms will aim at improving compliance, reducing reckless driving, and reducing the number of accidents. As a driver, it will be important to change and take note of these changes in order to steer clear of fines and maintain road safety.

Reduction of Speed Limits All Over the Country

Speed limits are being reduced by 10 to 20 kilometers per hour in various zones like urban residential areas and freeways as well as in school zones due a high number of accidents. This also includes high risk areas and compliance to the new limits will be enforced with heavy fines.

Implementation of the Alcohol Policy with Zero Tolerance

The alcohol regulations have the zero-tolerance policy defined for all drivers. Having any measurable BAC can lead to harsh penalties, including licence suspension or even criminal prosecution. The use of breathalysers will be more common and rigidly policed.

Crackdown on Driving and Mobile Phones

Penalties for mobile phone use while on the road have been tightened. There are now stronger fines and penalty points for actions like talking on the phone or texting while holding a phone. Repeat offenders are now facing stiffer penalties under these updated regulations.

Demerit Points to be Used Throughout the Country

The AARTO (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences) demerit system is being implemented in new regions starting December 2025, to be completed by April 2026. Drivers will now gain points for infringements—serious ones such as driving under the influence or running a red light may lead to suspensions once a certain number of points have accrued.

Technology Advances Law Enforcement

Road authorities are improving enforcement with new technology—speed cameras, automatic number plate recognition, and expanded breathalyser use at roadblocks. There will also be digital platforms as well as apps to inform motorists of new laws and penalties.

What Drivers Should Do Right Away

Make sure to look over the new speed limits in the city, in the suburbs, and in school areas.

  • If driving, do not take any alcohol at all.
  • Keep distractions while driving to a minimum, and use only hands-free devices.
  • Keep an eye on your demerit points, particularly because of the regional expansion of AARTO.
  • Do not believe unfounded information; use trusted sources like SANRAL or the Department of Transport.
